Progress of the UN Mision in response to the environmental emergency

The UNEP/OCHA Joint Environment Unit (JEU) mission thanks Peruvian authorities for their efforts in facilitating their work since arriving in country on 23 January. The mission also recognizes the efforts made by the government and the stakeholders involved in the response to the 15 January 2022 oil spill in the La Pampilla refinery in the Ventanilla district of the Callao region.

Following working sessions and continued engagement with national and sub-national State offices, on-site reconnaissance and assessments and visits to the Repsol refinery, the mission is advancing on their final report, to be delivered to Peruvian authorities as per the terms of the Government’s request for assistance.

The report’s findings and recommendations will cover technical assistance and counsel for the State in containing, mitigating and cleaning affected areas, in managing and coordinating the emergency and in reducing the risk of future disasters brought about by ocean oil spills, including recommendations on methodologies and ordinances.

The technical report will also cover short- and medium-term considerations that seek to strengthen management, coordination and information management mechanisms to deal with the unprecedented scenario caused by the oil spill and seeks to serve the Government as a reference for decision-making to effectively manage the emergency and its environmental, social and humanitarian impact.

The mission continues working in close collaboration with the UN System in Peru, led by the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, to ensure that UN agencies, funds and programs are in position to provide the Government and affected communities with continued support after the mission concludes, should this support be requested.

The technical mission consists of experts from the UN and experts from Europe through support from the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.
